What the 2026 FIFA World Cup Can Teach Every Event Owner About Waste

The FIFA World Cup is the largest and most popular sport event in the world. For some cultures it is one of the most important events that happen every four years. In the summer of 2026, more than 6.5 million spectators moved through 16 stadiums across the US, Canada, and Mexico, generating an estimated 10,600 tonnes of waste in the process.

That number alone isn't the story. Every mega-event produces literally tons of waste and materials — the real question is what we do about it, and how the rest of us can learn and do it better each time. Festivals, concert venues, universities, and city governments operate a World Cup on a different scale, but they face the exact same core problems: how to feed enormous crowds without mountains of leftover food, how to reduce or manage disposable dishware, and how to get thousands of guests to sort their wasted materials correctly.

A handful of practices from this tournament stand out as replicable, proof that circular thinking works at scale when it's backed by strong intent and the right partnerships and infrastructure. A few other efforts also show where good intentions ran into logistical reality, which is its own useful lesson.

Food Recovery: the clearest win of the tournament

The most consistently successful initiative across host cities was food recovery. Food and organic waste constituted the largest single category of generated waste, accounting for 40% of the total tournament waste footprint. Rather than treating unused catering as trash, several World Cup venues built formal donation pipelines before a single match kicked off.

In Philadelphia, six matches generated 20,000 pounds of surplus food, redirected to the Garden of Health food bank and other organizations serving the region —nearly 14,000 of those pounds were pre-made meals like salads, wraps, and gluten-free options, ready to eat. Caterer Aramark palletized the surplus, and the whole system ran on a 24-hour turnaround from stadium to food bank shelf. Garden of Health CEO Carol Bauer put it simply: food that would otherwise go straight into a dumpster instead fed people who needed it.

Kansas City ran a similar model through the nonprofit Pete's Garden, which recovered more than 18,000 pounds of food from the stadium, the Fan Festival, host hotels, and watch parties — translating into roughly 16,500 additional meals for about 4,000 families. National nonprofit Rock and Wrap It Up! coordinated much of this behind the scenes, working directly with FIFA and team caterers.

The takeaway for other events: food recovery isn't a nice-to-have side program; it works best as an operational system, arranged with a nonprofit partner before the event, with a designated logistics plan for pickup and turnaround. A concert venue, a university dining hall, or a weekend festival can adopt the same basic structure at a fraction of the scale: identify a local food rescue organization, agree on a same-day handoff process, and build it into the catering contract from day one.

Good sorting infrastructure pays off

Waste diversion lives or dies on contamination rates, and Seattle's Lumen Field offers one of the clearest data points from the tournament.The venue processes about 16 tons of waste per game — roughly 8 tons compost, 6 tons recycling, and 2 tons landfill — and has driven its compost contamination rate down from 12% to under 1%. That's the difference between compost that's actually usable and a truckload that gets quietly redirected to a landfill because it's too contaminated to process.

Getting there isn't about better intentions from fans; it's about design. Clear signage, consistent bin placement, and staff sorting checks at the point of disposal all reduce the guesswork that causes contamination. This is a directly transferable lesson for any venue: a compost bin next to a recycling bin next to a landfill bin, all unlabeled and all shaped the same, will always underperform a system where the "right" choice is the obvious one.

Behavior is the real game-changer

Some of the tournament's most talked-about waste reduction didn't come from FIFA at all, it came from fans. Japanese supporters have famously stayed behind after matches to pick up litter in the stands since their first World Cup appearance in 1998, and 2026 was no exception. After Japan's group-stage draw with the Netherlands in Dallas, fans stayed in the stands with blue plastic bags collecting bottles and cups; the moment went viral, as it has at nearly every tournament since.

The tradition traces back to Japanese school culture, where students routinely clean their own classrooms, and to a cultural concept called meiwaku — the idea that leaving a mess behind creates a burden for others. A Japanese supporters' group, the Nip Ultras, formalizes the practice by handing out roughly 3,000 blue bags per match: fans inflate them to use as cheering props before kickoff, then fill them with trash afterward.

What makes this instructive isn't that other fan bases should copy Japanese culture wholesale, it's that the mechanism is copyable. A single, cheap, repurposed object (an inflatable bag that fans already have in hand) becomes a cleanup tool with almost no added cost or friction. The lesson here isn't that reuse systems don't work. Vancouver proved they do, at scale, for over a year before the tournament. It's that piloting a system is not the same as securing the organizational commitment to run it during your highest-pressure, highest-visibility event. For any organization planning a reuse program (a university dining hall going tray-free, a festival switching to reusable cups) the pilot phase needs to end with a clear, contractually binding decision to scale, not just a successful trial that can be quietly shelved when logistics get complicated.

Don't build what you don't need

One structural decision is easy to overlook because it happened before the tournament even began: all 16 World Cup venues were existing stadiums. No new stadiums were built for the tournament. That single choice avoided the enormous material footprint of concrete, steel, transportation emissions, and eventual demolition or underuse that comes with new, permanent construction for a temporary event.

For festival organizers weighing a purpose-built site against an existing venue, or universities considering new event space, this is a reminder that the lowest-waste option is very often the one that avoids new construction altogether, supplemented by temporary, modular, or reusable infrastructure where extra capacity is needed.

Bringing it home

These initiatives provide a real-world look at sustainability in action, offering valuable case studies and insights. The pattern that emerges across a tournament of this size is practical:

  • Partner with a food recovery organization before the event, not after, and build in a same-day logistics plan.

  • Look for low-friction, culturally resonant cues that turn attendees into participants instead of relying on top-down enforcement.

  • Invest in sorting infrastructure design: clear signage and intuitive bin placement measurably cut contamination.

  • Treat a successful pilot as the start of the commitment, not the end of it. Lock in the decision to scale before the pressure of the live event arrives.

  • Reuse existing venues and infrastructure wherever possible; the greenest cup, stadium, or stage is the one that didn't need to be built.

A World Cup is an extreme case: a compressed, high-stakes stress test of systems that festivals, concerts, campuses, and city events run on a smaller scale every season. The most useful thing we can take from 2026 is a set of tested ideas, some of which worked beautifully and some of which stalled at the point where commitment was needed most — both are worth learning from before the next event goes on sale.
